The presence of demons and angels on Supernatural has opened up tons of possibilities for the show to explore, and one of my favourites is the idea of vessels, both in terms of in-universe identity issues as well as giving us as viewers the opportunity to see different actors take on the same role.

We've already had a picture post about pre-existing characters being possessed and so this month the focus is on recurring angels and demons in all their different shapes and sizes. :)

meatboats ahoy! )

Which is your favourite version of each character? Why? Do you associate the character with one particular actor, like always picturing the hospital janitor as Azazel or the little blonde girl as Lilith? What do you think was the coolest/most interesting/most unsettling vessel change?

Hi, Roundtablers!

Most of us are reeling in one or other direction in the wake of the finale last night, but fandom goes on -- and with the hiatus on the way, I expect a flurry of activity. ;) This post concerns a New Feature we've decided to try implementing: Pimp Your...

As you probably know, one of the main intentions of the Round Table is that it should be, well, a round table -- a place where every aspect of fandom is equally free to represent itself, and where everything that goes on is as inclusive as we can make it. Naturally, every fanperson only moves in the circles of fandom that s/he's interested in, so it's hard for one person, or group of people, to reach all the corners. Luckily, we're not just working with one person here at Round Table; we're working with hundreds, and between you guys, we've got to have quite a lot of fandom covered, right?

So, here's the concept: we want to launch a regular feature for the members of Round Table to 'pimp out', or pitch, those particular parts of fandom which are small, or lesser known, or neglected, and which you wish had more activity. Ever wished there was more fic with JDM in it? Pitch JDM fandom here. On the other side of things, ever wished you understood what Novaks fandom was all about? Hopefully, this can also be the sort of place you can come to find your answers. Basically, if you're a fan of a rarepair or a niche genre in fandom, we want you to sign up and explain it and its benefits to everyone else -- a sort of Ship Manifesto for your favourite thing that nobody pays enough attention to.

What counts as a rarepair/niche? Well, some of the things we thought of included: CW RPF femslash, Jared/JDM, Meg/Castiel, Bobby/Rufus, Novakverse, Thingstiel, J2/Danneel/Gen -- but, obviously, this isn't an exhaustive list! If we could think of all the component parts of fandom ourselves, we wouldn't need Pimp Your... :) If your pairing/special area isn't listed, that doesn't mean it's not okay! Sign up, make your suggestion, and as long as it isn't Sam/Dean, Dean/Castiel or J2, it's allowed. Don't worry if you're not sure how to structure your post or what to put in it -- we're here to help with all that stuff later.

Ask the Author: [info]beckaandzac
Hi, there! I'm Becka, and the lovely and talented [info]lazy_daze asked me to be your Ask the Author for this month.

I've been writing fanfic since before I could write (Star Trek: TNG killed off my favorite character, Tasha Yar, when I was four; I needed a fix-it), but until I fell headfirst into Harry Potter fandom in 2004 I'd never really been in a fandom, per se. I shipped Remus/Sirius hard, and I wrote a bunch of fic, and I made friends with people on the internet who loved the things I loved as much as I did. Amazing! I hung out in HP fandom for years almost exclusively. And then a real life friend of mine who was also fannish told me I should watch Supernatural, and we marathoned all of season one right before season two started airing (I'm so glad I didn't have to wait through that hiatus, y'all). I was still writing mostly HP then, but I started to dabble, writing little gen and het pre-series stories.

I didn't ship Wincest in the beginning, and I remember having a conversation with someone back then about how pointless I thought RPF AUs were, because why wouldn't you just write original fic?? Well, guess what…

Here, let me tell you about some Wincest and RPF I've written! )

I really just write about things I like (as I think the above list shows), and I like a lot of things. I love the opportunity fanfic gives us to explore relationships of all kinds and in all sorts of contexts. It took me a while, but I think I know why people write RPF AU. ;) The creativity in this fandom is magical to me, and I've tried a lot of new things as a writer because of it. I've also written plenty of things because someone else challenged me with a premise and I ran with it; once I even picked all the plot twists in a fic via LJ poll. I've also written a lot of filthy porn, and I love that there's room to do that too, and to talk about sexual fantasy in a way we often just don't in real life.

Sooo, what do you all want to talk about? Ask me anything!

Hi: I based this set of recs on the theme for the month regarding what we feel the future might be for Sam and Dean, Jensen and Jared.

Here be possible futures for the boys )

Hey, everybody! Just thought I'd drop by with some recs for you. One of my favorite themes in fanfic is pre-series. I love Sam's shifting moods and confused feelings, all of his angst and trauma over his changing body. I love Dean being so susceptible to the claustrophobia of their lifestyle, all of the ways his wires get crossed while trying to take care of his Sammy. I adore the tone of this genre. All of the following stories are fantastic examples of what is so great about pre-series fic.

Do be warned, in all of the following stories Sam is under the age of 18 and most of them involve explicit sex. If this is not your thing, read these ones!

Speechless by [info]virginia
Rated: PG-13
Summary: Sam has taken a liking to slipping into Dean's bed during the night. And even though Dean can't comprehend why, he finds it hard to complain.

A Functional Kind of Art by [info]fossarian
Rated: PG-13
Summary: Sam helps patch Dean up, in his own way.

Greetings! I am [info]de_nugis, and I'll be doing the monthly chat posts here at [info]spnroundtable. Over the summer I hope to get into some canon meta and some talk about the various forms of fanwork, but for my first Chat I thought I'd return to the theme of the comm's very first chat post, which asked comm members and visitors to share their Supernatural fandom origin stories.

So, how did you get here? Are you an old timer who watched the pilot live, or did you discover the show more recently? Is Spn one in a long series of fandom encounters for you, or is this your first venture? Do you write, art, vid, podfic, meta, etc., or do you prefer to just hang around and watch and chat? What is it about this show or this fandom that got you involved?

cut for my own origin story )

So introduce yourselves, chat with each other, have a delightful Sunday Spn fandom cocktail party. Tell your stories. Enjoy the fact that we are all here.

(Note: suggestions for topics for future Chat posts are very welcome. Feel free to comment here or PM me; I am working on building up a library of ideas, and I'd love to know what you all want to talk about.)

Every season brings fics that focus on either alternate endings or different outcomes.
Some of us loved season 6, some of us didn’t, and some of us fell somewhere in between.
Wherever you landed, here are some fics in which the events and themes of the season take us places canon didn't.
Enjoy!

This month the roundup is thrown open to you guys! Use the comments to ask and answer everything you ever wanted to know about podfic. This includes "where's the podfic" type questions, plus where are the best resources, plus anything else you come up with! (Please, no self-recs unless it's a direct response to someone's question and you can rec one or two others in addition to your own.)

Here are some questions as a starting point for discussion in the comments:

I'm a Sam/Dean person at heart, but the idea of Sam/Cas is intriguing. What podfic(s) should I start with?

Which SPN podfic have you listened to the most times? (Please answer this one, we'd all love to know!)

What's your favorite GarageBand/Audacity tutorial?

What's the best way to post a streaming version of my podfic?

Get the idea? You guys are the best resource around - let's all help each other out!
